JAALS Conference
In 2019, the JUSTICE ADEREMI ANNUAL LECTURE SERIES (JAALS) was established to honor the memory of the late Hon. Justice Pius Olayiwola Aderemi JSC, focusing on good governance and effective administration of justice in Nigeria. The lecture series serves as a platform for the exchange of ideas between the government and the governed.
The maiden lecture (the 2019 edition) of the JAALS Foundation was titled ‘Governance and Good Governance: The Role of Governments’. It was delivered by Emeritus Professor Michael Omolewa, OFR with His Lordship, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon. Olukayode Ariwoola, GCON, as the Chairman of the Occasion. We were also grateful to have His Lordship commission The Pius Olayiwola Aderemi Arcade, donated to the Nigerian Bar Association, Ibadan branch.
In preparation for the 2nd edition (the 2020 edition), a national essay competition with over 105 applicants (between 1-7 years post call) was organized on the topic ‘Importance of artificial intelligence (AI) to the future of legal profession’ with Professor Hon. Justice Alero Akeredolu and Professor Damilola Olawuyi, SAN (Deputy Vice Chancellor, Afe Babalola University) both served as the panel of judges. The winners (the best 10 entries) won a laptop and one year subscription of the law pavilion e-research tool kit each. The 2020 annual lecture was delivered by Mrs. Funke Adekoya SAN on the topic ‘Effective justice delivery system: Is the e-path the game changer? A panel of discussants which include Hon. Justice R.B Akintola, Mr. Seun Abimbola SAN, Mr. Rotimi Ogunyemi reacted to Mrs. Adekoya’s lead paper.
The 3rd edition (the 2021 edition) focused on the advocacy of empowering sub-national governments in Nigeria and was delivered by the immediate past President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Olumide Akpata Esq. on the topic “Devolution of Powers: a panacea to Nigeria’s insecurity?”. The first Lady Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Chief Folake Solanke, SAN chaired the session.
The 4th edition (the 2022 edition) focused on the importance of the 2023 election year and the keynote speaker was a former Nigerian Minister of Education and Director at the World Bank, Dr Oby Ezekwesili, on the topic ‘The 2023 election year: The Birth of a Restructured Nigeria?
The 5th edition (the 2023 edition) focused on the need for good governance, leadership and accountability and the keynote speaker was the current President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mr. Y.C Maikyau, SAN OON, on the topic ‘Good Governance, Leadership And Accountability: The Panacea For A New Nigeria’.
